So it's been a few weeks since my last blog post—but I haven't forgotten! Life has picked up and become very busy as the end of summer has gotten closer. I've had several shoots recently ranging from working with local models, family portrait sessions and interestingly enough some food photography.
Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Executive Chef John Korycki from Zazios Italian Restaurant + Bar for an epicurean (food) photoshoot. Zazios is a standard for Italian cuisine in the downtown Kalamazoo area, and will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary this October.
Chef John and his team use fresh, locally grown ingredients for all of their menu items, and wanted some shots of their staple dishes. Being fairly new to food photography I knew I want to bring a clean, beautiful look to each dish and highlight Chef John's beautiful plating.
This was a challenging shoot for me. I don't normally photograph food and was using a loaner Canon EOS Rebel T2i and the 18-55mm kit lens with only natural light. Definitely outside my comfort zone.
As I photographed each plate, I was attempting to control the specular highlights of the scene, paying close attention to the silverware and plates. To further aid in the clean look of the images, I wanted colorless specular highlights free of the reflection of the table's surroundings.
Epicurean photography, like product photography is definitely a different animal than portrait work. Without a person in the scene you have time to think, compose and adjust light to work towards a beautiful image. I feel that we came away with some excellent shots, and getting to taste some of the delicious, made-from-scratch Italian cuisine that's typical of Zazios, was icing on the cake.
